DOLMEN AND GALLERY GRAVE, grounds of Ballymascanlon Hotel near Dundalk

TO TOP
A Neolithic portal dolmen tomb that now looks like a tripod, but
probably had side stones. Portal tombs have a single chamber and
an entry between two portal stones, sometimes with a blocking stone
between. The capstone weighs about 53 tons and may have been covered
or just showing above a cairn of stones. Nearby is a wedge or gallery
tomb of a kind used in Neolithic and Bronze age times. To visit
the dolmen you must go by this small but equally interesting tomb.
The hotel’s leaflet does not mention this nor does the heritage
label. |
