If your parrot starts plucking, do not hang about. Take action now. A
feather plucking problem can become a chronic habit which is difficult to
change. Parrots can end up looking like supermarket chickens if their owners
don't move fast.
Start by finding a vet who specialises in parrots. Your normal vet can refer
you to him, or you can check Parrots Magazine (www.parrotmag.com) for their
list of bird vets . A run of the mill vet will not know enough (and if he/she
thinks otherwise, he/she is not a good vet) and various essential investigations
will take too long waiting for tests to come back etc. You should start
with a thorough veterinary investigation in case feather plucking is a sign
of severe illness. When you get to the specialist vet, ask for a copy of
his notes so that you can keep them with you for future reference. You may
need them for a behaviour expert. |
