HOW CAN I STOP MY HAMSTER BITING ITS CAGE?

Hamsters need to chew something and the bars may be all that they have to chew, says Pamela Milward of the Southern Hamster Club. Give them branches of fruit trees, hazel, (not poisonous trees like yew), a wooden clothes peg, coconut shells, or maybe even a bunch of old keys (make sure there are no sharp edges). Some hamsters will enjoy chewing cobnuts, walnuts and brazils.
Chewing the bars can become an unbreakable habit, so make sure he has a large cage with firm well welded bars or even think about keeping him in a large aquariu (with a house to retreat into). Avoid the elaborate plastic cages with tunnels these can be too hot and a fat hamster can get stuck.
