DO GOLDFISH SLEEP AT NIGHT?

Goldfish feed during the day. "At night, they are far less active and generally rest in a torpid state" says Dr Peter Burgess of the Aquarian Advisory Service (PO Box 5059, Melton Mowbray, LE14 4ZN) "It isn't true sleep and they cannot close their eyes because fish do not have eyelids. Some goldfish rest on the bottom of their aquarium, however their neutral density in water means they can also rest in mid-water." Fish need this period of rest. Experts like Dr Burgess suggest keeping on aquarium lights (if you have them) for only 8 to 10 hours a day. "Otherwise it messes up their circadian rhythms."
