Budgies are intensely social birds that live
in huge flocks in Australia yet we keep single birds all on their own. These
small parrot-like birds are migratory and can fly hundreds of miles yet
we keep them in cages where there is not space to fly.
They feed in scrubby grass and roost in eucalyptus trees. They eat mainly
seed, but also feed on green stuff and small insects. They also feed on
the leaves, stalks, buds and unripe nuts of eucalyptus trees, eating the
sap and oils.
Their main feeding periods morning and late afternoon, but are more likely
to have short feeds during the day and are reported to spend periods between
feeds almost motionless in their roost trees.
They nest in holes in trees, rather than build nests.
