WHAT MAKES A GOOD BUDGIE TOY?

A mirror will make a bird feel less alone and is really important for a single bird. Most budgies also enjoy swings. Always ensure that bought budgie toys are safe - many are cheap foreign imports and may have sharp edges. Avoid paper clips and stapled paper. Old shoelaces give great joy. Hens like ripping things up - so newspaper, plain little cardboard boxes etc will amuse for hours.
Branches from non-poisonous trees - fruit trees, willow, hazel, rowan, elm, poplar, and sycamore - make good perches and budgies will enjoy chewing the wood and bark. Twigs of eucalyptus, their native tree, are best of all. Avoid all conifers and evergreens.
You can also thread twigs on to a natural hemp rope (never a plastic rope) and hang them up. "Shredders", palm leaf toys to shred, budgie play gyms, and balsa (soft wood) chews are available from Northern Parrots www.24parrot.com Change some of the toys (not the mirror) each week.
Music, Radio and TV can be company too - though programmes showing wild predators can upset them. See the last FAQ for budgerigar favourite programmes.
