HOW CAN I KEEP MY BUDGIE SAFE?

Put attachments on doors so that they close automatically. Any large pane windows should have curtains or net curtains hung on them. Or put wire netting over windows, remembering high small windows are a perfect escape hole for birds. Remove all mirrors from the bird's room and remove any ceiling fans. Never allow a bird to stay on your shoulder, keep it on your hand when it is with you.
The following human foods are dangerous - any salty foods or salted nuts, avocado (possibly lethal), persimmons (also known as Sharon fruits), rhubarb, chocolate, tea, cola, coffee, alcohol, cigarettes and cigarette smoke.
If houseplants are known to be poisonous to humans, it is safest to assume that they may be harmful to birds too. Keep your houseplants in another room. The kitchen, which is unsafe for birds anyway, might be the place for your plants.
Smoke from pans and burning kitchen items can kill any bird in a few seconds. Tobacco smoke is very bad for them too. Birds are far more sensitive to any air pollution than humans - that's why they took canaries down mines. Do not use household cleaning fluids, matches, anti-stick saucepans or air fresheners of any kind in the same room as any bird. Newly painted surfaces can also release toxic fumes. All kinds of household chemical items are dangerous.
Many people take their budgies' in their cage into the garden and sit with them. But if you are putting the cage under a tree, place a cover on the top of it. If wild bird droppings fall from the tree into the cage they could spread disease. Don't leave the cage unattended - my mother did and a passing boy let out the budgie for his own amusement. Budgies either starve in the wild or are killed by hawks or cats.
