As the London Daily Telegraph's pet agony aunt I get a varied and sometimes hilarious post bag - parrots going bald through plucking their feathers, cats that leave their bottom over the edge of the litter tray, budgerigars with a taste for violent TV programmes, dogs that won't let their owner's partner sleep on the bed, house rabbits that try to bonk the family cat, or hamsters that escape under the floorboards.

The other part of my working life is writing books. Some of these have been books about cats or dogs but most of them are inspirational books. These have arisen out of my own inner struggle to attain a balanced and serene life. In the past I have had at least one episode of serious depression, and there are still occasions when I fear I am falling back into that dark hell. I search for serenity, hunt for happiness, and try to fill the emptiness inside with something - God or a power greater than myself. Fellow survivors will know what I mean.

I write about my experience of depression and the spiritual side of my life in more detail in my book, "If God Is My Father." It was a cat, Fat Ada, that helped me at that worst moment in my life. On a day when I thought I should kill myself, to rid the world of the blight of my presence, I looked at her and realised she needed me. I was the only person with which she had bonded. It is not too much to say that Fat Ada saved my life at that moment. Alas Fat Ada, is now in feline heaven.

Cats are important to me. I am devoted to and obsessive about the species in general and Fat Mog and William the Wimp in particular. Fat Mog has four major interests - food, food, food and sleep. Wimp William is an exceptionally beautiful cat who uses charm to get out of trouble. When all else fails, he lies on his back and waves his fat paws in the air with seductive gestures.

There are other enthusiasms in my life too. I collect Victorian cat and dog cards. I tend a wild flower garden. I am passionate about stone circles, the mysterious legacy of prehistoric man in Britain. You will find a little more about these by clicking on the Enthusiasms button.
